A Lasting Joy

His (John’s) father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied: “Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, because he has come to his people and redeemed them.” ~ Luke 1:67-68

Zechariah was a new dad. He and Elizabeth had just had their first son, John, in their old age. One can understand the joy of a new parent at the birth of their first child.

Through the Holy Spirit, Zechariah could see God’s great prophecies being fulfilled–his son would prepare the way for God’s Son, who would change every life that has ever walked the face of this earth. God revealed to Zechariah that his son, John the Baptist, would be the forerunner of the promised Messiah, Jesus!

At Christmas we hear again about God’s Son–born in poverty in a manger. Because of Jesus, we know that the Heavenly Father has done everything necessary to draw us to himself. Our sin is forgiven because of Jesus. Our debt is paid. We are God’s children!

Heavenly Father, we praise and thank you for the gift of joy you give to us and our families. As we enter into a new year, fill our hearts with the joy of Christ in all we say and do. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
